URGENT CALL TO HELP LOCAL IMMIGRANT

Calling on community! A Black immigrant is being threatened with deportation. They just left detention yesterday – they need $2,100 this week to secure housing & pay legal fees. Law enforcement has told them if they don’t have “acceptable” housing in place by the end of the week ICE will be brought back in & deportation process started.
They are formerly incarcerated & got picked up. They are in Atlanta, GA.

Background:

Leslie Mac of BLUU reached out to me yesterday about an individual she’s working with – see her note below.

Hey Susan – Hope all is well with you. I have an urgent financial ask for a Black immigrant being threatened with deportation. Do you know of any UU-related sources that might be available for this kind of emergency ask?

We do not have a UUA fund – though I am in conversation with staff about starting one. Meanwhile I reached out to Hannah Hafter at UUSC as I know she’s done some work with Atlanta congregations and migrant rights groups. She has put out an ask through multi-faith networks.

But I was wondering if UUCA might have some migrant justice, social justice or discretionary funds to help with this case. Or if you have ideas on how we might quickly raise some funds from UUCA and Atlanta area UUs. Please feel free to call me with any questions you might have – my cell is best. Thanks. — Susan
