Music & The Arts
MUSIC AND THE ARTS
UUCA has one of the most eclectic and excellent music programs in Atlanta. On any given Sunday you can hear music ranging from Gregorian Chant to Musical Theatre. From Gospel to traditional. From Bach to Bob Marley. In every case the music is performed either by our talented in-house musicians or by friends of UUCA from near and far.
In addition to a broad array of musical offerings, UUCA also houses The Underground Theatre, Atlanta’s oldest avocational theatre, our Wine, Cheese, and Spoken Word events, the Underground Coffeehouse, and the longest continually running volunteer art gallery in Atlanta. The UUCA Art Gallery hosts new exhibits monthly.
For many years, the UUCA Choirs have brought musicians of all abilities together to create incredible music for worship services and in the Atlanta community. We achieve our musical excellence through a great joy in singing and togetherness.
The Phoenix Choir is the flagship of the music program at UUCA. This auditioned choir is open to adults and high school students who are willing to commit to weekly rehearsals and the Sunday singing schedule (approximately every other week). Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from 8-9:30 pm in the Sanctuary. Auditions are held in early August of each year. The Phoenix Choir is under the direction of Donald Milton III.
UUCA’s Tapestry Choir is a non-auditioned choir for adults and high school aged youth. With a smaller time commitment than our Phoenix Choir, this group is ideal for people who want a singing outlet but don’t have a lot of time, have always wanted to sing, or want to get back into singing. This group is open to all adults and high school aged youth and new members are welcome to join at any point during the year. Rehearsals are on Wednesday nights from 7-8 pm in the Sanctuary and the Tapestry Choir sings about one Sunday a month. The Tapestry Choir is under the direction of Donald Milton III.
Music for Children and Youth
Every Sunday morning during the services our Children and Youth Music Director, Lucas Tarrant, teaches a music lesson to all interested kids. They sing, play instruments, move around, and learn some music history. As this program grows we hope it will transform into a Children’s Choir but keep the spirit of joy and engagement that the kids are enjoying now. For more information please contact Lucas Tarrant (link to firstname.lastname@example.org)
Annual Christmas Eve Pageant
Every holiday season, our intergenerational Christmas Eve pageant brings together both the young and the young-at-heart. There are many parts for people of all ages. Sign-up sheets are typically available in November and December at the Family Welcome Center, and a single rehearsal is held the Sunday before Christmas Eve. The pageant is led by UUCA’s Music Director, Donald Milton III.
Music for Youth
The youth musicians at UUCA come together every year for our annual Youth Service and wow the congregation with their talents and deeply emotional performances. This program will be led by Children and Youth Music Director, Lucas Tarrant
Music For Everyone
UUCA’s Ukulele group is open to anyone, of any age, who plays, or wants to learn to play, the ukulele. Those who play other instruments are also welcome to join us. We sing, play, learn together and have fun! We use The Daily Ukulele, compiled and arranged by Liz and Jim Beloff. The UU Ukes meet at UUCA on Wednesdays from 7:30-9 pm. For more information, email Helen Borland or call or 678-836-4169.
First Friday Singers
“Come, come whoever you are…” This is an informal group that meets at UUCA on the first Friday evening of every month. There is no special skill level or requirements, just an informal sing along open to all. Feel free to bring your guitar, kazoo, drum, spoons or other instruments. If you have your own copy of Rise Up Singing, please bring it. If you have a favorite song, bring about 15 copies of the words along and we’ll try it! For more information, email Terry Carpenter.
