Emergence.Emergence occurs when a system is observed to have properties as a whole that its constituent parts do not have on their own, properties or behaviors which emerge only when the parts interact in a wider context. Perhaps the best example is life itself, which is an emergent property of chemistry. To say that life emerges from chemistry is not to reduce it, but instead to emphasize how life is something more than mere chemical reaction. The common characteristics of emergence are: (1) radical novelty; (2) integration of individual parts into a stable and coherent whole; and (3) dynamic evolution of the emergent system over time. As we leave this prolonged season of isolation and enter into a new season of togetherness, what will we see emerging within our hearts, our minds, our lives, and our community?
