RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES FOR YOUTH 2008A Kingdom of Equals - 11 and 12 year olds (6th and 7th grade)*as of Jan. 6, offered at second service onlyA Kingdom of Equals is a program on the life and teachings of Jesus which approaches the figure of Jesus as an ancestral source of modern Unitarian Universalism and highlights the relationship between Jesus' teachings and UU Principles and Purposes. The guiding premises of the course include the following: The character of Jesus of Nazareth is a pivotal figure in both secular and religious history. The ideas of equality and radical love as taught in the Jesus stories are still an ideal and spiritual path worthy of study. The Jesus stories are universal and, therefore, open to interpretation and definition. No attempt is made to accept or refute any other church's beliefs or dogmas related to these stories. As basic familiarity with major people and events of the Bible is a part of any Westerner's heritage, we wish to provide our young people with biblical literacy. Coming of Age - 13 year olds (8th Grade) * offered at second service onlyThis program, designed by the UUCA Coming of Age team, helps youth explore what it means to move fully out of childhood and into the journey-time called adolescence. This can be a positive growth time for youth to ask important questions about life, meaning, spirituality, and relationships. It is meant to help youth think about issues, and to form their own opinions and values. Some of the elements of the program include: a focus on faith development, a mentor program, social justice involvement, developing a connection to the congregation and the denomination, and several retreats and special celebrations. This year, our Coming of Age class is planning a trip to Boston in the summer of 2008. Click here for an article written by one of the class members about planning for the upcoming journey." High School - 14-18 year olds (9th-12th Grades)This group chooses their own programs, integrating the six components of a healthy youth program: education, worship, social action, community building, leadership development and partnership with adults. Our Whole Lives (OWL)" - 12 to 18 year olds (7th-9th Grades and 10th to 12th grades)Our Whole Lives" is a series of sexuality education curricula for five age groups: grades K-1, grades 4-5, grades 7-9, grades 10-12, and adults. OWL helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. Grounded in a holistic view of sexuality, "Our Whole Lives" provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education classes begin Jan. 13. Jr. High (7th- 9th grades) and Sr. High (10th-12th grades) will meet on Sunday afternoons. Classes last three hours, from 3-6 pm. Parent orientation sessions will be held on Sunday, Jan. 6 from 1-2:30 pm; and Wed., Jan. 9, from 7:30-9 pm. The orientation is required for first time OWL participation at the Jr. or Sr. High level. The cost for OWL classes for UUCA families is $75 for Jr./Sr. High. For families not registered in the program, the cost is $100. Registration forms were mailed to all households in November; extras are available at the RE desk in the front lobby. For more information contact Pat Kahn, Director of Religious Education, at pkahn@uuca.org or 404-634-5134. Click here for the registration form. Additional Information with Youth and FamiliesIn addition to our Religious Education classes, we offer a youth group for both Junior High and High School, which we refer to as YRUU (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists). We also offer other special activites for youth and families. In some instances, we need to have a signed permission slip. A successful youth group relies on active Advisors and volunteers. Youth in grades 6-12, Youth Advisors, parents of youth, and/or Youth RE teachers are invited to apply to be on an Advisory Team to interview candidates for the Youth Coordinator position. If you are interested in being on this team, please email a short statement about why you'd like to serve and what gifts you would bring to the team to Pat Kahn by April 4th.
