Upcoming Sermons & Music
Between Labor Day and Memorial Day, we offer Sunday worship services at 9:30 am and 11:15 am, each followed by a Coffee Hour.
Nursery and toddler childcare is available from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.
We encourage everyone to dress comfortably. Dress ranges from shorts to coat and tie; khakis and jeans are common.
February 28 – Cultural Creatives and an Emerging Wisdom Tradition (Rev. Marti Keller)
A decade ago, social researchers speculated that there were at least 50 million or so people whose shared world view defined them as Cultural Creatives, not surprisingly many of them religious liberals. While Cultural Creatives are a subculture, they generally lack one critical ingredient in their lives: awareness of themselves as a whole people. We call them the Cultural Creatives precisely because they are already creating a new culture. If they could see how promising this creativity is for all of us, if they could know how large their numbers are, many things might follow. Musical gifts given by our Phoenix Choir and the UUCA Ringers.
March 7 – Higher Laws (Rev. Anthony David)
We continue our First Sunday sermon series which focuses on one of the great classics of Unitarian Universalist spirituality: Henry David Thoreau’s Walden. March’s sermon focuses on Thoreau’s message in chapter 11 of Walden, “Higher Laws.” Read along with us! Walden (with Introduction and Annotations by Bill McKibben) is available in our UUCA Bookstore. Musical gifts will be given by the Phoenix Choir, the Chalice Choir, violinist Keanu Mitanga, cellist Myrtil Mitanga and flutist Laura Burke.
UUCA’s First Sunday sermon series unites all ages in a shared process of discovery. In worship, people of all ages will hear a story that touches on the theme of the month, and then, children and youth will go to their religious education classes to continue exploring this theme while adults in worship will hear a sermon about it. This opens up the opportunity for families, after services, to share their thoughts and experiences with each other.
March 14 – Planting Seeds of Soul: The Seed of Open-Mindedness (Rev. Anthony David)
Writer Marcel Proust once said, “The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” To do this requires continuing work on opening our minds and keeping them open. This is what we explore in the sixth installment of the “Planting Seeds of Soul” series. Musical gifts will be given by our in-house band, Shades of Gray.
March 21 – Music Will Save the World (Donald Milton III)
The Greeks said that music and astronomy were two sides of the same coin. Astronomy was seen as the study of relationships between observable, permanent, external objects, and music was seen as the study of relationships between invisible, internal, hidden objects. This service will feature many UUCA musicians in a service of music and readings.
March 28 – When Everything Changed (Or Has It?) (Rev. Marti Keller)
A recently published book chronicling what the author sees as the amazing, transformative journey of American women over the past 50 years inspired this comparative exploration of both the true progress and the sad and bad reversals of the status of women and girls worldwide. How can we help turn oppression into opportunity?
Rev. Keller will be installed as the President of the Unitarian Universalist Women’s Federation (UUWF) following the UU General Assembly in Minneapolis in June. Previously, she served for six years on the Margaret Fuller funding panel for work in religious feminisms and is currently vice-president for communications for the UUWF. Prior to her ordination, she worked as a public policy director for Planned Parenthood and was executive director of two statewide organizations that focused on advocacy for women and girls.
Apr 4 – Planting Seeds of Soul: The Seed of Gratitude (Rev. Anthony David)
We celebrate gratitude in this year’s Easter service. Join us for an inspiring time full of song and story, and featuring our beloved annual Flower Celebration. Please bring a flower to exchange. All ages are welcome. This is the seventh and last installment of the “Planting Seeds of Soul” series.
