Project Phoenix Update: June 15, 2018

Renovation of 2650 N. Druid Hills Road NE
The Project Phoenix Design Team and Steering Team unanimously decided to engage Collins Cooper Carusi (CCC) architects and interior designers (collinscoopercarusi.com) to help complete the building and interior design work at 2650 North Druid Hills Road NE. CCC has great experience crafting sustainable space for multicultural and diverse spiritual communities. Some of their work includes the Buddhist Cultural Center in Atlantic Station, the Global Ministries Headquarters of the United Methodist Church, and Temple Sinai in Atlanta. Many thanks to UUCA member Charles Forrest who recommended CCC  for interior design services. Our CCC team includes Fiona Grandowski (architecture and interiors), Dawn Franklin (architecture) and Sara Quarta (interiors).

Congregational Vote Needed on Leasing of Temporary Space
Lease negotiations for temporary space are progressing very well. The Project Phoenix Steering Team hopes to share more details in the week ahead. To be able to commit to any leased space, Project Phoenix needs congregational approval at the special congregational business meeting at 11:30 am on July 1, 2018, in the sanctuary. At least 120 qualifying members are needed to hold the vote, which requires a simple majority to approve. You must be present to vote. Commit to be part of the 120+ on July 1 by adding it to your calendar now and by adding your name to the informal 120+ Voting Roster.

Project Phoenix Update: May 11

Purchase and Renovation of 2650 N. Druid Hills Road NE
With the approval of the needed zoning variance on May 9, 2018, the Board is moving forward with purchase of the 2650 N. Druid Hills Road NE property.  Our attorney is preparing the closing documents, and the Board hopes to close on the property before the May 20th Congregational Meeting.

The Board is in the process of executing a contract with the architect for the renovations, interviewing interior designers, and developing the RFP for a general contractor.  There is still a call for suggestions for a general contractor.  If you wish to suggest a general contracting firm,  send the firm name to ProjectPhoenix@uuca.org.  The Project Phoenix Team is appreciative of all the suggestions received in response to the call for suggestions of  firms for various aspects of the renovation.

 Gathering of the Memories Celebration
The deadline for responding to the invitation to our Gathering of the Memories Celebration on May 20, 2018, 5:00 – 9:00 pm, is Sunday, May 13, 2018.  Everyone is invited to the celebration of our time at 1911 Cliff Valley Way, but the Celebration Team has to know how many folks to expect and needs a firm number to provide to our caterers.  If you haven’t responded, be sure to do so as soon as possible.  Open the invitation, click on “Continue,” and add your name and email address to the guest list.

Rummage Sale of 1911 Cliff Valley Way Items

More details about the sale and the potential items for purchase will be available at a later date.

Project Phoenix Update: May 9
Zoning Variance Approved!

At their meeting today (Wednesday, May 9, 2018), the DeKalb County Department of Planning and Sustainability Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved UUCA’s zoning variance request to increase the lot coverage at 2650 N. Druid Hills Road NE to 60 percent in order to expand the parking lot and the building, so long as the property is used for a house of worship. There was no one present at the meeting in opposition to the request and approximately 15 UUCA congregants were in attendance in support of the request.

The condition that the request be approved so long as the property is used as a house of worship was added to the motion for approval by Vice-Chair Dan Wright after agreement by our attorney Michele Battle that we would have no problem with that condition.

Project Phoenix Update: May 4

2650 N. Druid Hills Road NE Property
The soil tests on the property did not reveal any granite outcroppings that would prevent the planned parking.  Subject to approval of the parking variance request (see Meeting Reminder below) we will be able to have 160 parking spaces, 34 more than we currently have at 1911 Cliff Valley Way.

The Project Phoenix (PP) Team is still calling for suggested names for a general contractor, a landscape architect (including the Memorial Garden), an interior designer, and a kitchen designer.  If you wish to suggest a firm for any of these areas, send the firm name to ProjectPhoenix@uuca.org

In addition, the PP Team is looking for congregants with IT experience to help with estimating costs for IT in our new location.  If you wish to volunteer, contact the Team at ProjectPhoenix@uuca.org.

1911 Cliff Valley Way
From now until we leave this property, Children’s Health Care of Atlanta (CHOA) will be paying UUCA to use 50 of our parking spaces Monday-Friday for their construction workers.  CHOA spaces are marked.  If you are at UUCA during the week, please be sure not to park in the CHOA spaces.

Meeting Reminder
As announced last week, the DeKalb County Variance Meeting will be Wednesday, May 9, 2018, 1:00 pm, in the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive, Decatur, GA 30030. Although there will not be an opportunity to speak, congregants are urged to attend to provide visible support for our variance application.  If you can attend, try to car pool with others, since parking in downtown Decatur is at a premium.

This celebration will also feature “The Great UUCA Poster Show!” Our goal is to fill the building with congregant-created posters that focus on memories of times past as well as posters to point us toward our bright, new future. All are encouraged to make a poster that captures your cherished memories. Click HERE to get started!

Project Phoenix Update: April 6: Special Land Use Permit

Our attorney, Michele Battle, and the DeKalb County Planning Department, through an archive search, have determined that a conditional use permit was issued to Cokesbury Methodist Church, the church that occupied the 2650 N. Druid Hills Road NE property prior to Still Waters United Methodist Church, approving the use of the property UNCONDITIONALLY as a church sanctuary and educational building.

This finding means that we no longer need a SLUP to proceed with any changes to the property or buildings thereon. This means the Tuesday, April 10th meeting with the District 2 Community Council is canceled. We will need to obtain a variance to modify the parking. The variance hearing will be May 9, 2018.

Further information will be presented at the April 15, 2018, 12:45 pm, Town Hall Meeting in the UUCA Sanctuary.

Project Phoenix Update: March 2: Vote Passes at Special Business Meeting
At the Special Business Meeting of the congregation on Sunday, February 25, 2018, the vote to authorize the UUCA Board to sign the Purchase and Sale Agreement (PSA) for the Still Waters property at 2650 N. Druid Hills Road passed by a ninety-three percent vote: out of 248 votes cast, there were 231 “Yes,” 9 “No,” and 8 “Abstain.”  The vote easily surpassed the required threshold that had been established by the initial vote to suspend the rules to require a positive vote equaling or exceeding seventy-five of the votes cast. For more information about the vote check out the March 2 Project phoenix Update.
