Unitarian Universalism: A Narrative History, by David E. Bumbaugh

Have you ever wondered how this denomination came to exist? Bumbaugh's book provides an overview of Unitarianism, Universalism, and Unitarian Universalism from their beginnings in Europe to the end of the twentieth century, and he tells the story in a readable and accessible way. This book is perfect for ministers and students seeking a review of church history, Adult Religious Education and New Member classes, and those outside Unitarian Universalism who seek a comprehensive introduction to our movement. Buy this book from Amazon NOW!

A Chosen Faith: An Introduction to Unitarian Universalism, by John A. Buehrens and Forrest Church

(This book) ... is hard to describe. It is a history of the denomination, with lively passages depicting the lives and ministries of important UU leaders. Yet it is also a collection of testimonies by contemporary laypeople and ministers, who describe their churches' responses to questions ranging from "How do I know when to get married?" to "How should the government treat single mothers?" And, finally, it contains some straightforward explications of the denomination's core principles. The Church's aversion to creeds will be off-putting to some readers - but there's something universally refreshing about this protean faith: UUs have a true genius for accepting God's most surprising Words. -- Michael Joseph Gross, courtesy Second Unitarian Church of Omaha Buy this book from Amazon NOW!

At Home in Creativity: The Naturalistic Theology of Henry Nelson Wieman, by Bruce Southworth

For many religious liberals, Wieman (1884-1975) saved theology from the secular modernists and the conservative Barthians of his time. Southworth traces Wieman's life and the events that shaped his philosophy.

This text, first published in 2001, has been a source for many sermons from UU pulpits across North America. Wieman was a major interpreter of the Process Theology of Alfred North Whitehead, and will surely be remembered as one of the most important UU theologians of our era. Buy this book from Amazon NOW!

JESUS SEMINAR FOLLOWUP TEXTS

After the Jesus Seminar on the Road visited UUCA last spring, the Modern Mind class and a new Jesus Seminar Followup Group at UUCA have studied more about Jesus of Nazareth and his teachings. The bookstore has these relevant titles in stock now.

The Religion of Jesus the Jew, by Geza Vermes

Vermes, a professor at Oxford, is Jewish himself, and he has published several titles about Jesus in particular and about Second Temple Judaism in general - including several translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls. His purpose is to recapture the Jesus of history prior to, and independent of, his becoming the Christ and Lord of Christianity. For Vermes, Jesus was "a popular teacher, healer and exorcist, who fits perfectly into the first-century Galilee. He represents the charismatic Judaism of wonder-working holy men." He concludes for Jesus's humanity against traditional Christian dogma and belief as to his divinity. Whether one accepts Vermes's position will depend as much on one's own theological presuppositions as on the force of his argument, if not more. Buy this book from Amazon NOW!

Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, by John Dominic Crossan

Crossan is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, DePaul University, Chicago. He has written twenty books on the historical Jesus in the last thirty years, four of which have become national religious bestsellers. He is a former co-chair of the Jesus Seminar, and a former chair of the Historical Jesus Section of the Society of Biblical Literature, an international scholarly association for biblical study based in the United States.

This text describes the social, economic, and political environment in which Jesus developed his movement. It makes clear why Jesus thought and taught as he did, and it raises questions about how the Christian churches have or have not remained faithful to the teachings of their putative leader. Buy this book from Amazon NOW!

Jesus and Buddha: The Parallel Sayings, by Marcus Borg

Borg is the Distinguished Professor in Religion and Culture and Hundere Endowed Chair in Religious Studies at Oregon State University. An early member of the Jesus Seminar, Borg has published many texts on the historical Jesus and on ways for people to live as Christians even in modern times. This text prints sayings of Jesus and of Buddha side by side so that readers may compare them and learn from both teachers. It is not a history text, but it is thought-provoking. Readers can take the teachings in small doses and digest them in a leisurely manner. Buy this book from Amazon NOW!

The Jefferson Bible, edited by Thomas Jefferson

The third president was probably the most brilliant man to hold the office. This title has been a steady seller for many years at the UUCA bookstore, and it is still available now. "Thomas Jefferson believed that the ethical system of Jesus was the finest the world has ever seen. In compiling what has come to be called "The Jefferson Bible," he sought to separate those ethical teachings from the religious dogma and other supernatural elements that are intermixed in the account provided by the four Gospels. He presented these teachings, along with the essential events of the life of Jesus, in one continuous narrative." In this stunningly intelligent book, Karen Armstrong, one of Britain's foremost commentators on religious affairs, traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present. From classical philosophy and medieval mysticism to the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the modern age of skepticism, Karen Armstrong performs the near miracle of distilling the intellectual history of monotheism into one superbly readable volume, destined to take its place as a classic. In our supposedly secular age governed by reason and technology, fundamentalism has emerged as an overwhelming force in every major world religion. Why? This is the fascinating, disturbing question that bestselling author Karen Armstrong addresses in her brilliant new book 'The Battle For God'. Armstrong focuses on three fundamentalist movements: Protestant fundamentalism in America, Jewish fundamentalism in Israel, and Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt and Iran - exploring how each has developed its own unique way of combating the assaults of modernity. Blending history, sociology, and spirituality, 'The Battle For God' is a compelling and compassionate study of a radical form of religious expression that is critically shaping the course of world history.
