THIRD THURSDAY CINEMA, Thursday, May 15 As we enter the "knowledge economy," how do American high school students compare with their peers in India or China? "Two Million Minutes" follows top students from each of these countries and interviews them and their families about priorities during their senior years in high school. Four years of high school equals approximately two million minutes for students around the world. Who is doing the best job of building their intellectual foundation to prepare for college and compete in a global market? A $3 donation is suggested for the evening including refreshments and a discussion. Sponsored by the Peace Network. 7pm. Room 209-210. For questions or information, contact Renee Vorbach, 770-491-6817.
SPECIAL ONE-DAY EXPLORATION OF OUR UUA PRINCIPLES AND PURPOSES, Saturday, May 17 Our recent gifts survey revealed a high level of interest in learning more about Unitarian Universalism, its history and undergirding sources of beliefs and ethics. Our association is currently reviewing the seven principles and purposes adopted more than 20 years ago and encouraging congregations to do the same. Saturday, May 17 from 9-noon, Rev. Marti Keller and UUCA Board member Shirley Adams will be leading an information and discussion session "Re-Examining Our UUA Principles and Purposes: Creed, Covenant or Conundrum?" It will involve individual and group reflection. This class will be appropriate for those new to our community and longtime UUs. Those attending this year's General Assembly in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in June are especially urged to attend. Participants are encouraged to read minister emeritus Rev. Dr. Edward Frost's book With Purpose and Principle, available in our bookstore. For more details and/or to register, contact mkeller@uuca.org.
CONGREGATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING, Sunday, May 18Please plan to attend the Annual Congregational Meeting this Sunday, May 18, at 12:30 PM, immediately following the second service.
We will include in the meeting a slideshow on Rev. David's Installation and Rev. David will announce our new full-time Music Drector. We will celebrate the accomplishments of this first year of Rev. David's ministry and vote on the proposed slates for the new members of the 2008-2009 Board of Trustees and Nominating and Leadership Development Committee. We also will vote on the proposed Covenant of Healthy Relationships. This will be a fun meeting as we transition leadership, revisit highlights of the year, and covenant with each other on how we intend to be together as a community.
In preparation for our Annual Congregational is is your best opportunity to ask questions about the congregational covenant before we vote on it at the annual meeting. You also may ask questions about the nominating process.
If you have ANY questions about the covenant or nominating process, please make every effort to ask them BEFORE the congregational meeting. Come to the town meeting or contact the board at board@uuca.org or the Nominating and Leadership Development Team at nominating@uuca.org.

VOTE ON COVENANT OF HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, Sunday, May 18At the annual Congregational Meeting, UUCA members will vote on the proposed Congregational Covenant of Healthy Relationships. In preparation for the meeting, members should have received (by mail) the Covenant and a FAQs document about the Covenant. Last November, 270 members and friends responded to Rev. Anthony David's invitation to write down ideas they would like to see in a Covenant. A summary of the survey results can be found here. A Covenant Drafting Team distilled hundreds of responses into four key practices that specify ways we can act to put our 7 Principles into actions--to create 'Beloved Community'. If you would like to talk about the Covenant before the annual meeting, please stop by the Covenant table in the Social Hall after each service through May 18, or attend one of the Town Hall Meetings on May 7 or May 14, 7:30-8:30 pm. Or if you have questions you can e-mail to Doug Abell, one of the drafting team members, at dabell@uuca.org. And please plan to attend the Congregational Meeting on May 18, at 12:30 pm!
SOCIAL JUSTICE EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOP, Saturday, May 31UUA trained facilitators from Boston and California will lead us through a process to assess and take a fresh look at the quality of our current justice programs. We will identify current and new issues members want to address, and how, as a congregation, we are creating opportunities for our members to put their faith in action and create a more just and caring world. Come and contribute your ideas, vision and energy, and walk away with concrete action plans! Childcare will be provided at no cost for parents who register by May 16. A light lunch will be served ($6/person). To register, email Laura Wade, Justice Associate, lwade@uuca.org

THIRD THURSDAY CINEMA, Thursday, June 19 ''BREAKING RANKS" is very moving Canadian documentary film examines the phenomena of US soldiers seeking refuge in Canada as their resistance to the Iraq War. It follows the lives of 4 military deserters, their families and their experiences as they try to exercise their consciences amidst profound emotional, ethical and legal consequences. It explores the universal story about the painful forming of character of men growing to manhood in more complex ways than they expected. These young men navigate the international controversy caused by their decisions...heroes to some, traitors to others. Their stories raise challenging questions about citizenship and the meaning of duty as they become controversial peace activists. A $3 donation is requested for the evening including refreshments and a lively discussion. Room 209-210 Sponsored by the Peace Network. Sven Lovegren: 404-634-7750

UUA GENERAL ASSEMBLY, June 25-29 It’s UUA General Assembly time! The 2008 General Assembly (GA) of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations happens in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, June 25-29. GA is a gathering of UU congregations and a feast of Unitarian Universalism worthy at least one pilgrimage for any Unitarian Universalist! You can find more information about this rich annual event and register to attend at uua.org/events/generalassembly Right before GA begins there is a two-day educational event called UU University. Congregation leaders–current or upcoming–will find this time well spent! More information about UU University is at uua.org/events/uuuniversity . As usual we will host a Mid-South District Ingathering at the very beginning of GA, on the Wednesday afternoon before the Opening Session and Banner Parade–so we hope to see many folks who are attending at this event. The General Assembly is where the democratic governance of our Unitarian Universalist tradition is lived out. It is the place where the voices of individual Unitarian Universalist congregation are heard. UUCA will send delegates to General Assembly, to represent us in the votes taken during the plenary sessions. With the 2008 GA happening as close by as Ft. Lauderdale, folks from our region can imagine attending–so give serious consideration to this opportunity this year! See you in Ft. Lauderdale!
INTERWEAVE SEEKS PARTICIPANTS FOR PRIDE 2008, July 4-6 The Unitarian Universalist congregations of Georgia join together each year to participate in the Atlanta Pride Festival. The main purpose of the Atlanta Pride Festival is to promote unity, visibility and self-esteem among lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender persons and to promote a positive image in the Atlanta area and throughout the Southeastern United States through community activities and services.
This year's festival will take place July 4-6 at the Atlanta Civic Center. UU congregations collaborate to staff a booth at the Pride Festival in order to share information about our liberal religious community and invite festival attendees to local UU congregations. In addition, UU folks will be walking with a float in the parade. We're ordering t-shirts and making banners and hope to have a big crowd! Participating in Atlanta Pride is a wonderful way to put into action the UU principle of promoting the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
We need your help-please volunteer to work the booth, help build the float, or walk in the parade. Contact Gia Maddry: gmadd2440@yahoo.com; Valerie West: vwest66@yahoo.com; or Joetta Prost: joettapro@mindspring.com to volunteer or learn more. For additional information about Atlanta Pride, go to atlantapride.org.
