UUCA'S ENS & OUTS

Ens & Outs is an organization focused on environmental activities, environmental issue advocacy, and outdoor activities; in particular, it is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of our natural environment.

Group activities include weekly hiking, camping, and canoeing trips throughout Georgia and into surrounding states. Ens & Outs actively works on a variety of issues affecting the environmental protection of the State of Georgia and the City of Atlanta. It often coordinates its environmental issues advocacy with the major Georgia environmental groups. It also operates a recycling center on UUCA property and contributes the proceeds to the church. The group publishes a quarterly newsletter for members that includes a calendar of upcoming activities, reports on recently completed trips, and environmental news of interest to members. Members may also subscribe to the email listserv and receive timely news of issues and outings.

Outings Calendar

May 10:  CANCELED; We will be hiking the Big Bend Trail and a small part of the Chattooga Trail in the Sumter National Forest in South Carolina. The hike will be about 7 miles round-trip over easy terrain, and will include a lunch/picnic stop on the Chattooga River.  Pot luck at our house after the hike. We'll provide grilled hamburgers and chicken.  Anyone who would like to relax can read/swim at the house while we hike, and join us for the pot luck when we get back. We'll meet at our weekend house in Mountain Rest at about 10:30 AM and carpool to the trailhead (about a 15-minute drive).

May 17: Hike Wayah Bald; outside Franklin, NC.  Experience the beauty of wildflowers plus the bragging rights that come with hiking part of the Appalachian Trail.  Expect 4 miles of either strenuous (going up), or moderate (going down).  Bring a picnic lunch and money for dining and strawberry shopping along the way.  Early departure – for details contact Sally Joerger 404-929-9221 or saj60@mindspring.com

May 18: Planning Potluck – 6:00   Come share stories about past hikes over delicious food, plus lay the ground work for future stories.  It is a potluck so please bring a dish to share.  Visitors welcome.  Paula and Clay will host.

May 24: Folk Music festival at Stephen Foster State Park, White Springs, FL.  Join Bill Goolsby and Maggie Chesnutt for a weekend of great music and paddling on the Suwannee River.  This is an annual event that attracts many wonderful folk musicians.  Bring your canoe or kayak for fun on the river.  We will stay in motel rooms, although camping is also possible.  Let me know soon if you want to come - I will be reserving rooms.  770-939-9368 or bill.goolsby@gmail.com.

May 31:  CANCELED; Come relax at the Cabin on Bull Pen Rd, near Cashiers, NC.  This is by the Chattooga River, Ellicott Rock, and other wilderness areas, so various hiking trails are near and offer distances ranging from 2 – 8 miles.  If the cards are right and interest high we may experience stone grinding corn, using water power, in mill on site.
