What happens to groups after one year?

After the one year commitment has been fulfilled, one of several things may happen. The group may completely dissolve, remain fully intact with no member changes, some members may leave while others stay, or new members may join as space allows.

What do we talk about at meetings?

The focus of each meeting is any topic or activity that serves as a springboard into reflection on deeper issues of who we are and what gives our lives meaning.

Over the years, a library of group topics and session outlines has developed within the UU community and is available to each group as they determine topics of interest. Groups may also prefer to keep the theme or content open, so that they are free to focus on whatever is currently significant in their lives.

Examples of group topics that have been explored include:

  • What place does prayer and/or meditation play in your life?
  • What does the term “Caring Community” mean to you?
  • Reflective questions from ministers’ sermons
  • Spiritual reflection and connection with social issues
  • Sustainable Lifestyles
  • UU Principles at the Workplace
  • What are your “ten commandments”?
  • How has your father influenced your life?
  • What does “God” mean to you?
  • Is human nature basically good? If so, how do you account for evil?

What is the Covenant Group format?

Each Group gathering is structured to help us set aside daily distractions and make connections with one another. Covenant Groups throughout the UU community all subscribe to the following meeting format. In addition, Covenant Group members covenant to perform a yearly service project which may substitute for the monthly meeting.

  • Opening Words and Lighting of the Chalice
  • Check-in (A brief personal sharing of how the individual member is feeling, update on known issues with the individual, etc.)
  • Focus of the meeting (Group discussion of predetermined topic by the group)
  • Check-out (Similar to Check-In with focus on any additional personal thoughts about the week ahead or group discussion.)
  • Closing Words and Extinguishing the Chalice
